Ironman-UK-About the Race

The ironman-uk will take place in Sherborne. Race-day is August 20, 2006 and the race begins at 6 a.m. As of mid-January, there were still spots available. 1500 athletes are expected for the race.

As with all Ironman races the you can expect a mass swim start. The course consists of two loops of Sherborne Lake and the cut-off time is 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Some notes about the ironman-uk swim….

Wetsuits are mandatory. Prepare for the possibility of a delayed start.(extra food/water might be wise if you desire). Also due to events beyond organisers control there could be a last-minute course change. As with all Ironman swim starts be sure to seed yourself according you your ability as the swim start will be congested.

The bike course is a looping course and as a result there are only 6 aid stations, but you will pass them more than once.

The ironman-uk run course is out and back and there will be 12 aid stations available.

All entries must be made online @ iron.ironmanuk.com. After January 31st, there will be a late fee of $40.

For the camping enthusiast, ironman-uk is in an excellent location with some very well equipped campsite areas. A major campsite borders the actual race-course.

Computer’s Data Security: Necessity and Myth

There is no 100 % protection for your computer. But this doesn’t mean you cannot prevent you data to be unauthorized accessed.

Once I was chatting with my colleagues about the security issues and the ways the information can be protected. Our main goal was to understand if the Dekart family products can be used for assuring data access protection. We were talking about existing software, about the devices available for buyers and about the percentage of an assurance we can get from these tools available on the modern market so far. We also touched the other side of protection: it’s vulnerability. We came to the conclusion that it is not simple to get the information protected, as there are many well-established strategies and methods developers (to say nicely), whose target is to get to know what is valuable for you.

But anyway there are the directions we can work on in order to minimize the risks for unauthorized access to our data. Here are they.

1. If you want to protect your data it is important to assure the building (office, home), security access and protection. There are many security agencies available on the market, which can be of real help. They have different protection strategies and tools. But as this is not directly related to your computer we will let the specialists in the area to let us know about it and we will move forward.

2. Hardware protection. There are many tools available for computer protection, like physical computers locks, which may be locked through a hole in the desk/object, or can be locked to a mounting bracket affixed to the vertical surface. There are different kits, mostly consisting of security cables and locks. These anti-theft devices are designed for Notebook laptops and PCs, with special requirements adjusted for different models.

3. Computer data access limiting. There are tolls and software, which may be used for home and business computer access protection. The multifactor authentification (with password, pin code and biometric data) can be used with Dekart Logon software, which can be of real help for storing all passwords to Windows machines on one removable storage device and add the strong authentication and convenience to the standard Windows logon procedure.

4. Information encryption. While we were talking about these issues, we were able to note that there is a tool which can protect data, even if it is stolen, even if there will be the most brilliant software hackers working on getting to know it. It is amazing! We were surprised to get to know that any important data can be stored and encrypted with Dekart Private Disk, which an easy-to-use, reliable, user-friendly and smart program. It is of real help in creating encrypted disk partitions (drive letters) to keep private and confidential data secure. It uses 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard. So, here is a no risk solution to protect data!

5. E-mail protection.

6. And the last important thing to note is don’t forget to assure that you have the same plans for the part of the world, as God has in terms of earth cracks, tsunami, etc.

Together with our colleagues we came to conclusion that there is no perfect security environment, although it is not wise at all to stay unaware of the risks existed and to minimize the solutions to this issue available. At least we were satisfied with Dekart Products we were testing, so we decided to get Dekart Private Disk and Dekart Logon.

This is not so difficult topic to understand. We just wanted to encourage you to think of solutions existed. Just look for the information and act!

How to Win At Home-Based Business? Hit The Floor Running

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion… or… it will be killed.

Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle… or… it will starve to death.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a gazelle or a lion, when the sun comes up… you better be running.

****

With no boss breathing down your neck or clock to punch, It can be so tempting to stay in bed one hour longer, to postpone picking up the phone and contacting that prospect, or to focus your time and energy on the easy and fun stuff and put the unpleasant stuff off until later.

One of the core competencies you need to succeed at home-based business is DISCIPLINE. You are now responsible for your success 24/7 and if you aren’t doing what is required to succeed, there won’t be someone to come along behind you and clean up your mess. It’s do or die, eat or be eaten.

To truly succeed as a serious home-based business owner, you need to be strong-willed and self-disciplined. You also need a solid, thorough, written plan to keep you on track and in constant motion.

To ensure continuous momentum, you can plan your daily activities a month in advance, or even weekly. Some people prefer to dedicate each day of the week to a different task, for example:

Monday - marketing
Tuesday - business building
Wednesday - customer relations

… and so on.

Others prefer to perform a variety of tasks on any given day, for example:

Monday - marketing (morning), business building (afternoon)
Tuesday - customers relations (morning), industry research (afternoon)

The most important factor here is have a Plan and stick to it.

Although most people start a home-based business to create freedom, many of them fail to recognize the critical importance of a structured plan.

No plan = no business and no business = no freedom.

So remember, hit the floor running each morning, keep ahead of those who are following behind and overtake those in front of you. Whether you’re the lion or the gazelle, you’ve got to run!

How to Get Pregnant

It seems that almost everyone has some advice to offer the couple who are having trouble getting pregnant. Many women simply conceive more easily than others, and there’s no doubt that that some of that “good advice” can be helpful.
Relax is probably one of the more common pieces of advice and it’s probably good advice. Studies have shown that stress can hamper efforts to get pregnant and some couples find that pregnancy occurs naturally once they stop worrying so much about what they are doing wrong.

But all that good advice should eventually give way to a trip to the doctor, if the couple are serious about having a child. But should you consult a doctor if you don’t intend to go through the heroic measures sometimes required to conceive? Absolutely. Many couples find that there are some simple answers to their problems and that solving those problems will allow them to get pregnant quickly.

Some people have found that a minor infection or illness was the culprit. In many cases, the person hoping to conceive may not have even known they were ill. A virus can send signals to the female body that pregnancy is not a good idea. A round of antibiotics or some other simple cure to a seemingly unrelated illness may be all it takes to get pregnant.

There are also many treatments and procedures that are relatively inexpensive, easy and non-invasive that allow couples to conceive, even if getting pregnant naturally isn’t an option. Not all fertility issues are serious, time-consuming and expensive. And if you’re serious about becoming pregnant, one trip to the doctor may be all it takes.

By all means, take a little time to let nature run its course. But if you’ve been trying to become pregnant and it just hasn’t happened, it may be time to seek out some medical help.

A Nuclear Power Plant May Be Next for New Mexico

Federal lawmakers patted themselves on the back, last Friday, in a joint bi-partisan news release issued by three New Mexico politicians: U.S. Senators Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman, and U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce. Their celebratory remarks were meant to remind voters why the politicians were in Washington - to bring their state new jobs for at least some of New Mexico’s voters. While the chorus of praise revolved around creating new jobs and bringing millions of dollars into the state’s economy, is there more behind this story, which has not yet been told?

For Senator Domenici, this was another major victory as the longest serving U.S. Senator in New Mexico’s history. The Republican Senator heads the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Domenici made his views on nuclear energy quite clear in his book “A Brighter Tomorrow: Fulfilling the Promise of Nuclear Energy” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2004). He began pursuing Louisiana Energy Services to move to New Mexico in February 2003, after it became apparent Hartsville, Tennessee didn’t want uranium being enriched in their backyard.

And again, it was Domenici, whose last minute negotiations with Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, led to the adoption of the Part 810 Waiver. The waiver allowed Louisiana Energy Services (LES) to contact foreign-owned Urenco Ltd about transferring high technology data (the gas centrifuge technology) to LES so the uranium enrichment technology could be utilized at the new facility. U.S. laws ordinarily prohibit such nuclear technology transfers, but Domenici’s intervention brought the project to the NRC approval stage. LES had been on the drawing boards since 1989, having derived its name from the state of Louisiana. The LES partnership was initially formed with the intent of building its centrifuge enrichment plant in Homer, Louisiana.

Senator Domenici’s impact upon the nuclear resurgence in the United States is evident to the entire industry and most politicians. He announced last year, “In 1997, I predicted the resurgence of nuclear energy in the United States. For the last eight years, I have worked to help make that renaissance a reality.” Is there, perhaps, one more achievement Senator Domenici would like to add on behalf of the nuclear industry, before giving up his Senate seat? In his book, “A Brighter Tomorrow,” Domenici bemoans and condemns nuclear fuel reprocessing. With the advent of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP), Domenici may bring a nuclear power plant to New Mexico before he retires.

Domenici’s Democratic counterpart, Senator Jeff Bingaman, is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Energy and Natural Resource Committee. We suspect Bingaman may play an integral role in helping Senator Domenici fulfill that dream. Ironically, Senator Bingaman, who last November was invited to a Santa Fe anti-nuclear environmentalist fundraiser, and which highlighted television mogul Ted Turner, was effusive in saying about the LES enrichment facility, “This will be one of the largest construction projects our state has ever seen. And the economic impact in southeastern New Mexico will be tremendous.” Does Bingaman appear to be playing both sides of the nuclear chessboard?

No, the former attorney, who reportedly once provided legal advice to uranium mining powerhouse, Kerr McGee, is deftly maneuvering between being a good Democrat and providing what he may honestly believe is best for his state. While Bingaman has curried favor among the environmentalists, in May of this year, he accepted, along with Domenici and others, the William S. Lee Award for Leadership at the Nuclear Energy Institute’s (NEI) annual conference, saying, “I share a belief that nuclear power can make a meaningful contribution to controlling the growth of greenhouse gases, while still allowing our economy to expand.” It was his subsequent remark directed at the NEI, which leads us to believe he may be among the first to support additional nuclear growth in New Mexico. He told the NEI, “I am hoping that you will do your part to use those tools that Congress has put in place to ensure that nuclear power achieves its potential as part of our future energy mix.”

The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership

In March 2006, Senator Domenici pledged his support to President Bush’s Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP),

“With GNEP, we begin to close the cycle on nuclear waste in ways that prevent proliferation and reduce both the volume and toxicity of waste. By recycling spent nuclear fuel, we can reuse the uranium, which is 96 percent of spent fuel, and separate the most toxic radioactive material to be burned in an advanced burner reactor. By reusing uranium fuel and burning the transuranic material in a new generation of modern reactors, we can reduce the amount of waste placed in Yucca Mountain by a factor of 100.”

One of the key technologies in the GNEP program in is the Advanced Burner Reactor (ABR). Deriving its technology from fast reactors, which were used to make nuclear weapons, the concept of the ABR is to minimize the amount of nuclear waste, produced by the nuclear industry’s power plants, to a tiny fraction of content. The concept behind the ABR is to “burn” the transuranic elements, such as plutonium and other long-living radioactive material. In this case, burning the radioactive waste is translated as: destroying the transuranics, by converting them into shorter-lived isotopes. When the transuranic elements are consumed by the ABR, a large amount of energy is released and then converted into electricity.

Instead of burying several football fields of nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain (or elsewhere) for one million years, the toxic waste would be recycled as energy to be immediately used to power homes and industry. Part of the GNEP plan is to combine the current, or advanced, light water reactors with the ABR. As the light water nuclear reactors produce transuranics, the ABRs consume those highly radioactive elements. This leaves less nuclear waste for future disposal, and immediately provides energy.

The major issue in the western United States, about nuclear waste, is “please don’t put it in our backyard.” Several western states have been approached, and even the Carlsbad area was once discussed. Through the ABR technology, it may be possible to minimize the amount of this waste to make it a less undesirable disposal problem. A look at local New Mexico politics may provide an insight as to where the two U.S. senators may be heading with regards to a nuclear power plant for New Mexico.

New Mexico’s Enrichment Facility:
Prelude to a Nuclear Power Plant?

If Federal lawmakers are happy about the proposed uranium enrichment facility, some of New Mexico’s state politicians were still floating on clouds when we talked to them yesterday. New Mexico legislator John A. Heaton, the Democratic representative serving Carlsbad, waxed enthusiastic about the enrichment facility, “It’s the first step in converting this country to nuclear energy.”

Mainly the four state senators and representatives, whom we interviewed, echoed each other’s praise about Urenco’s proposed enrichment facility. “I could not be more pleased,” Senator Carroll H. Leavell told us. “It will have a major, very positive impact on the economy.” At the peak of construction, as many as 1200 workers may be employed. Later, when the facility is operational, about 300 workers will remain. All four were pleasantly surprised that town hall hearings for the proposed facility were overwhelmingly positive, and the local citizens would be delighted to have this facility in built in southeastern New Mexico. Senator Leavell said with disgust, “Most of the (anti-nuclear) protests have come from outside our area, places like San Francisco, DC and Santa Fe.”

Senators Leavell and Gay G. Kernan, the state senator from Hobbs, were invited by Urenco Ltd. to tour an enrichment technology plant in Almelo, Netherlands and left impressed with the company, its honesty and especially the management’s attitude of looking at both sides of the issues. Both state senators also observed the surrounding community failed to be negatively impacted by the enrichment facility.

Looking for deeper insights into what the future might hold, we asked all four about the possibility of a nuclear power plant in New Mexico. All four agreed it would be desirable. Additional comments by the four state politicians led us to believe there might be a second step, following Heaton’s remark about the enrichment facility being the first step.

Donald L. Whitaker, the Democratic legislator from Eunice, the closest town to the proposed enrichment facility, told us, “I would like to see a nuclear reactor in New Mexico.” Whitaker has toured a nuclear facility, and believes one would be great for the state’s economy. “They employ about one thousand and bring high-paying jobs,” he said. Representative Whitaker was not the lone voice among his fellow eastern New Mexican legislators.

“Yes, we want a nuclear reactor in New Mexico,” Representative Heaton said. Heaton is the legislature’s Vice Chairman of the Radioactive and Hazardous Materials committee and a member of the Energy & Natural Resources Committee. He discussed the ABR technology and GNEP, explaining how this would solve the waste disposal problem of nuclear reactors and sway public opinion on nuclear energy.

Senator Leavell took a more cautious approach, explaining how nuclear reactors need tremendous amounts of water. “I don’t think New Mexico could have a nuclear reactor, not with the current technology.” But, he still agreed it would be a good idea if new technologies were developed, which used less water.

Senator Gay Kernan told us, “I don’t know if I should be talking about this, but we are one of the candidates for the GNEP program.” Having heard a rumor that General Atomics may propose building a nuclear power plant in eastern New Mexico, Senator Kernan confirmed such a plant may be on the drawing boards, and telling us West Texas is likely to be developed as an “alternative energy corridor.” She told us, “It would stretch from Carlsbad, New Mexico to the Odessa-Midland, Texas area.” Senator Kernan would also like New Mexico to have a nuclear plant, “I don’t have a problem with that.”

The third politician, joining Senators Domenici and Bingaman, in praising the NRC approval of a draft license for LES and Urenco Ltd, was U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce. Comments, issued by his press secretary on Friday and praising the LES announcement, may foreshadow New Mexico’s next step, “Today’s announcement marks a major milestone in our efforts to cement our state’s leadership role in the development of alternative energy.” What greater leadership by a state than in introducing the new GNEP ABR technology in New Mexico? After all, the state of New Mexico remains the founding home to nuclear technology, where the world’s first atomic technology was designed at Los Alamos.

In a related development, David Watts, President of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, recently met with Congressman Pearce about developing a helium-cooled nuclear reactor facility, which would be built underground in either Lea County, New Mexico or Andrews County, Texas. General Atomics of San Diego has funded the pre-conceptual design, which is underway and scheduled for completion in August. Waste Control Specialists has a low-level radioactive waste storage site in Andrews County. Realistically, a nuclear reactor in New Mexico is not out of the question. The legislators may get what they want. We believe Senator Domenici will ultimately set into motion the plans to bring New Mexico its first nuclear power plant. It would become his crowning achievement in helping the nuclear renaissance blossom in this country and in his state.

Home Loans - Factors Affecting Your Loan Payment Amount

There are many factors that affect how much instalment amount you pay for your home loan. Understanding these factors will save you time and money.

Federal discount interest rate
Banks and lending institutions borrow money from the federal reserve banks. The discount interest rate is the rate charged by the reserve bank to the lending institution. The federal bank board of directors decide on the interest rate. This discount rate also called as prime interest rate is the interest rate on short term loans that banks charge their customers who have a high credit rating and are in good standing with the bank. You can get more information on the discount interest rate at www.FedPrimeRate.info

Your Credit Report
Consumer reporting agencies collect information about you. In general they gather and sell information about where you live, what you do, have you been sued, have you filed for bankruptcy, do you pay your bills on time and so on. When you request for a loan, your lender will pull up your credit report.
The FICO score is a method of determining the likelihood that the consumer will repay the home loan.

Business Factors
Banks and financial lenders are in a business to make profits by serving the customer. They have to balance profit with competitive factors. If they charge little based on your credit history, they risk going out of business. If they charge too much, they risk losing you to the competitors. Therefore, to get the best home loan deal, it is important to shop around.

Some of the online sites like lendingtree.com offer an incredible service where you fill in one form online and multiple banks compete for your business.

In summary, the above listed three major factors are the prime lending rate, your credit report and business conditions such as competition. In order to get the best rates, keep a good credit history by paying bills on time and shop around for best home loan rates.

How Not To Gain Weight At Christmas

The summer holiday season is over in the northern hemisphere; the days are shortening; and the nights getting longer and cooler. While you cling on to any remnant of summer you can find, through the odd warm day, the remaining summer flowers, and the holiday snaps you are now having printed, the remorseless progression into autumn and winter will continue.

For those of you who are overweight or borderline weight, you are now entering the danger zone. Autumn spills into winter and the winter holiday season, and the holiday season brings with it a lure to binge on all the traditional foods of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. So, as your outdoor activity is likely to decline, and your indoor activity likely to include lifting a lot of food and drink to your mouth, but not otherwise increase, it is a period of the year when you will be in danger of tipping your weight over the edge or up the scale.

If you are on, or should be on, a weight loss diet, or are on the brink of needing one, then now is a great time to take stock and plan ahead with fortitude. By being prepared for the diet battle of the Christmas holiday season, it can be a battle you will win with comfort. I do not say ease, because nothing comes easily when it means resisting some of your favourite foods; especially at a time when those around you are overindulging.

Once the summer holiday period is over, you have 3 months to get ready for the winter holiday season. So, what can you do to ensure you do not steadily put on weight during the autumn and then put your weight gain into overdrive from Thanksgiving to New Year? Here is the skeleton of a plan:

Prepare Your Mind For The Onslaught of Gluttony

Put against the perspective of the whole year, keeping to a sensible diet through the holiday season should not seem so difficult. Ask yourself, why on earth should you change so drastically over a few short weeks, especially over the Christmas holiday? Is it not possible to maintain a good diet through the whole of the winter, without spoiling your Christmas? Of course it is.

Much of any potential weakness will come from habit, peer pressure, boredom and stress. All of those things can be dealt with comfortably by a steady programme of meditation and relaxation. Inevitably, you will not be so encouraged into outdoor activities once the days cool down and the nights lengthen. From September, plan a regular yoga session, or other form of relaxation and meditation, that will help strengthen your resolve, and set you apart from peers in terms of individual mental strength. You will slowly assert your individuality in a way that will help you sail through the holiday season without succumbing to external pressures. You will be asserting control, which you can then apply to anything.

During meditation sessions, give regular attention to your diet. Not just your short term diet but long term, beyond Christmas. See yourself happily on a healthy diet all year; not just healthy, but a diet that you enjoy. Your Christmas diet can then just merge into that; the holiday season can be similar to the rest of the year without taking away from your enjoyment.

Get To Know Your Favourite Diet Foods

Being on a diet does not mean all enjoyable foods are out; that is just not so. It will depend of course what sort of diet you are on, but even if you are calorie counting, as the weeks pass you can prepare in your mind, or even on paper, all the treats that are a normal part of Christmas festivities yet very healthy.
Here are some that come to mind:

1. That Christmas turkey is not off the menu in most cases; lean white meat is likely to be acceptable. And is turkey not the symbol of Christmas lunch in some countries?

2. All the vegetables that go with the turkey can be delicious if you buy good quality and cook them well. Why not set your mind on organic vegetables only for the holiday season? That may seem an indulgence cost wise, but better to indulge in that than junk foods.

3. Fresh salmon is great for special occasions; how about fresh Scottish salmon delivered to your door. A treat, but one that should not damage your diet.

4. In the months leading up to Christmas, experiment with your own salad dressings, and try different olive oils. Salads with a difference can be healthy but still a treat.

5. Aim to have plenty of fruits around the house during the Christmas period. Want to indulge as it’s Christmas? What about your favourite fruits, something you regard as a treat? Can they not be fitted in to the Christmas spread?

6. There are a variety of nuts which make delightful snacks. In fact, my favourite food of all, and always a Christmas treat in England, is cashew nuts. Are you a cashew addict too? Keep lots of nuts around the home too over the holiday period.

7. As the evenings get darker, try finding some recipes for snacks that are within your calorie range but a little bit different, so they are special for Christmas. Select the best, and have them on hand over the holiday.

Really, there is an enormous amount of scope to make your holiday food a treat for you and those around you, without overflowing the tables with fattening foods. Mix in your mental preparations with the food selection, and over the next couple of months you will have a vision of a non-gluttonous, non-fattening Christmas indulgence. There is no need to indulge in quantity; just in the variety and quality.

Keep Up Summer Activity Levels

Without thinking about it, you have probably been more active physically in the summer months than you would normally be in the winter. Be aware of that fact, and plan regular exercise sessions throughout the winter. Visiting the gym twice a week would be great, but you can also build walking and swimming into your routines. Walking part of the way to and from work, or to the local stores, or taking the dogs on longer walks; all these things can contribute to your weight control, and make you feel better. If you feel better, coupled with your mental strength, keeping your weight down over Christmas will not be as difficult as you might have thought.

Reaching Your Consumer the Way They Want You to

At the annual American Association of Advertising Agencies media conference last week, speakers stated that the industry must cater to consumers empowered by technology and multiple content choices. A joint study with Harris Interactive and the American Association of Advertising Agencies reported that roughly one-third of consumers say there is too much advertising interrupting programming.

So…in a nutshell, as business owners, what this means is that we need to find ways to interact with our consumers in ways that are convenient for them while not interrupting them from what they are trying to do. While it may sound like a contradiction, it is certainly achievable. For example, most web site owners and anyone engaging in internet marketing has already realized that despite grabbing visitors attention in a big way, pop-up or pop-under ads generally perform very poorly if at all. In fact, they can often have a negative impact on a visitor’s experience and remove all possibility of them becoming a client or customer of the company in question. On the other hand, many companies have had great success with simple text links within relevant copy on a web site. There are several reasons for the success of this type of advertising, such as:

  • Relation to the content - The visitor is reading a particular page of a web site because it is of some interest. Conversely, links to relevant content elsewhere are more likely to be of interest to that visitor than those that are not.
  • Ease of use - All a visitor has to do is click the link.
  • Unobtrusiveness - A simple text link is not a pop-up, banner or big honking flash ad that plays circus music, therefore will not annoy visitors.

To use this idea in your marketing, all that you have to do is present your message in the manner that your prospects want to receive it, make it simple to use and most of all don’t annoy them. Perhaps you don’t know how or when your prospects want to receive our message, what they consider simple, or what annoys them. There is a solution for that as well. Ask them.

Understanding An Urban Myth ( 55% / 38% / 7% is Wrong)

The objective for most business presentations to is educate and influence people, while at the same time providing some entertainment to keep them interested. To achieve this, the audience must understand what you are saying. There are three aspects to understanding what someone is saying:

  • Vocal
  • Verbal
  • Visual
  • The standard percentages that are often quoted in relation to public speaking, are that 7% of the information is conveyed verbally, 38% vocally, and 55% visually. These percentages have become an urban myth, propagated by presentation trainers and voice coaches around the world.

These percentages are not only misleading, they are wrong. The origins of these figures are two separate studies, one conducted by Albert Mehrabian and Susan Ferris (1967) which compared vocal tone to facial cues, and the other by Mehrabian and Wiener (1967) which compared vocal tones to single words. The single word used was “maybe”.

Mehrabian himself says “My findings are often misquoted. Clearly, it is absurd to imply or suggest that the verbal portion of all communication constitutes only 7% of the message.”

However, that said, the way you say something has a tremendous affect on the way the words are received and the visual stimuli have yet another affect. What to aim for is having all three communication mechanisms, verbal, vocal and visual, to be in line with each other and to re-enforce each other.

    Verbally
Are the words that you are using easily understood by your audience? Try to avoid jargon and slang. Follow the KISS principle, decide what your main message should be and stick to it. Do not confuse the issue with a number of smaller less imported side issues, which do not support your main theme. They may be interesting points but if they are tangential to the rest of your presentation, they are best avoided.

    Vocally
Can your audience hear you? Are you talking loudly enough? Are you talking too loudly?
Talking too loudly can be as frustrating for the audience as someone who talks too quietly. I remember one sales training presentation I attended where the speaker felt he had to shout to make his points. The first couple of times he shouted everyone paid attention, the next couple of items people started to become irritated and from then on, everybody switched off and did not listen to a thing he was saying.

As well as the volume, try to enunciate clearly and do not mumble. Put some feeling into your voice rather than just reciting information in a monotone. By varying the pitch, tone and volume of our voice, you will capture people’s attention and they will understand you better.

If you are unsure of how to put that sort of feeling into your voice, practise by reading young children stories from their books. Most people become more animated when doing this.

    Visually
What the audience sees has to reinforce what they are being told, and how they are being told it. If you were told by the managing director that the company was doing really well and it was destined to break all its targets, while he was slouching about with a face as long as a wet weekend. Would you believe him?

Your visual aids, e.g. PowerPoint slides, should illustrate the points you are making verbally, they shouldn’t just be a list of bullet points but convey some added value.

Remember, all three aspects must corroborate each other. Having either of them contradicting what you are saying will ruin the communication.

Next time you hear a presentation coach reeling off the percentages 55%, 38% and 7%, it maybe time to ask them if they know what they are talking about.

    Self Employed Health Insurance Coverage

Your self-employed business could be a one-man show, a husband and wife team or one that employs a handful of people. In the first two cases, an individual policy or a family health insurance plan may be recommended unless you belong to a relevant organization.

If you feel that your business is likely to expand in the near future, you could take out a short-term policy and wait until the situation changes before deciding on the type of coverage you need.

The cost of a temporary policy is normally less than $100 per month. The premiums of self-employed health cover are tax deductible.

If you employ two or more people, it is considered a combination of self-employed and small business, and you may qualify for group insurance. This insurance would cover you and your employees, and the premium could be 100% tax deductible. Employees could also save on pay-roll taxes.

The National Association for the Self-employed will give good advice as well as formulate a good health coverage plan to insurance companies, agents and members of their organization. According to their specific requirements, employees could take supplementary coverage if they choose to. It is not compulsory for the employees to join, but there must be a minimum of two participating to be eligible for group insurance.

You can save money and service charges and may even get discounts if the premium is paid annually up front.

The business of health insurance is undergoing many transformations, and your personal requirements and business conditions may change. Therefore, it is wise to review your healthcare coverage annually and update it. Remember, that group plans are cheaper. By joining an association of self-employed, you can take advantage of this. Before adding additional health coverage, check whether the main policy covers what you need.

If you opt for higher deductibles, the premium would be lower. A deductible is the amount you must pay before an insurance company pays your medical bills.

Before buying health insurance, check provisions relating to pre-existing conditions. Always chose a policy that does not take long to become operational.
