Plan, Prioritize, Play 10 Strategic Ways To Be Time Rich And Stress Free

1. Retrain your self-talk, to remove selfish from your vocabulary and replace it with self-care. In order for you to take care of the people you love you need to take care of yourself first. Friends, family, loved ones look to you as a model, make sure to model self-care, taking time to play, relax, and read. This is especially important for parents; this will give your children the confidence to have the same healthy behaviors.

2. Give yourself time for delays and unexpected events. When mapping out your day add an extra hour cushion to your schedule. This extra time will keep you stress free and running on time if some of your appointments are delayed, or if you run into someone you haven’t seen in a while, so you can enjoy a spontaneous conversation without the guilt of running behind schedule.

3. Balance out your commitments. A great way to cut down on a hectic schedule is to balance out all new activities by removing an old activity. Don’t add anything new, work, classes, volunteer activities, etc unless you first remove something from your schedule to balance it out. This will help you to let go of projects and time wasters that no longer serve you.

4. No is not a bad word, in fact, it’s not only a complete sentence it’s a great stress reducing word. There is no need to justify or explain when you say no to someone’s request. Just give them a friendly smile thank them for including you and tell them you can’t do it this time. If you are having trouble getting used to saying no right away, tell the person you need some time to think about it, then call them later and decline to be involved this time.

5. Maximize your commute and errands. If you have errands to run for business or home combine them to one trip. Make doctor’s appointments for yourself or your family members back to back and see if you can get appointments first thing in the morning before the doctor is running behind. Order you business supplies online to save time, most business supply websites can store your most frequently ordered purchases in a file so all you have to do is select the item you want and have it delivered with just one click.

6. Improve your home environment one room at a time. Even if you have the budget for a complete makeover, remodeling and redecorating can be very time consuming and stressful projects. Try working on just one room at a time. Pick a few rooms in your house that you enjoy the most and spend most of your time in when your home. Select your favorite and create an environment that is pleasing to the eye and gives you comfort and positive energy. This will give you a haven in your home and the encouragement to tackle another room when you’re ready.

7. Being spontaneous is a very exhilarating feeling that gives you a real sense of freedom. Make sure to leave time in your life every week to be spontaneous. Cutting things out of your life that are time zappers and stressful will also give you the energy to be spontaneous. Keep at least two weekends a month free from scheduled activities. Then you can decide to take a short trip, have a date with your partner, a special family event, or kick your feet up and do absolutely nothing and feel wonderful about it.

8. Highlight those time wasters. Instead of just making up another long to do list so you can beat your self up about all the things you didn’t and couldn’t possible have accomplished in one day. Make a realistic to do list. Put the things that are most important to YOU on the top, then next to each item list the amount of time you think it will take to get it done. This will help you get your important things done and show you where your time wasters are.

9. Under promise and over deliver. This is very useful in business and in your life. By selecting reasonable deadlines you avoid the stress of crunch time, use your time effectively and you will be able to finish ahead of schedule giving you satisfaction for a job well done and turned in early.

10. Define what life and work without stress would look like to you. Describe what your ideal schedule is, what leisure activities you want to do and who you want to spend time with. By creating a detailed image of what a stress free schedule looks like, you can begin to take the steps necessary to clearing out the stress.

The Shortest Path to Any Goal is a Straight Line

Here’s something we all seem to do. We set a goal, and then we get “busy” and move in directions that don’t support reaching that goal. Our days get filled with a myriad of activities and POOF, the year is gone and we haven’t moved very close to reaching what we really want out of life and business.

In Simpleology, Mark Joyner tells a great story about pens and the US Space Mission.

NASA Astronauts wanted a pen that wrote in zero gravity. So, NASA went about creating one. It took millions of dollars and years and years to create it. They eventually did and it was amazing; for a while.

Russia took a straight line approach. They used a pencil instead.

A straight line always makes the most sense, but often we don’t know how to create and follow it.

Start by understanding what you want from your life in business.

1. What is the ideal vision for your business?

2. If you were living your greatest talent and passion in business, what would it be?

Write the answer to those questions down on paper. Refer to it often.

Clarity is the key.

* Writing the information down provides clarity.

* Reading it every day for a few minutes inspires you to focused action.

* Knowing what your goals are allows you to take a straight line approach to planning your day.

Planning your day ensures you are spending more time being productive on things that matter to you and less time being “busy” with things that keep you at the status quo.

Spend just spend 15 minutes, before your day starts, creating it on paper. What are you going to do that is moving you a small step closer to what you want in life? Think pencil, not pen.

EXAMPLE: “I want to enjoy my business more 2006.”

ACTION: List what you do NOT like about your business.

The opposite of what you do NOT like will be what you DO like.

Schedule at least one activity each day that brings you a small step toward enjoying your business. Be sure to analyze what you do throughout your day now. Stop doing things that take you away from your goal of enjoying your business.

Replace that time with activities that bring you enjoyment and satisfaction each and every day. When you take action that leads to what you want, you are passionate and on fire! When you are passionate and on fire, clients and prospects are naturally attracted to you.

The reason?

Because it is so unusual to interact with someone who L O V E S what they are doing.

Straight lines make you unique in a commodity driven world because you love every day instead of thinking of them as a chore.

It’s contagious. See how quickly you can catch the fever of living a straight line approach to every aspect of your life in business.

Organizing Your Goals

We all have goals and dreams that we want to accomplishsome big, some small. But until we can organize a plan on how to pursue these goals and dreams, we may never reach our final destination or possibly even start. Goals can help us to feel more confident and fulfilled. They can give us direction and help us to make decisions. Goal setting can help us to feel more organized.

Here are some simple steps to assist you in beginning your journey towards your goals.

1. Brainstorm - With pen and paper decide what goals you wish to pursue. Write everything down. Your list can be as long as you wish. Your goals can be as big or small as you wish. They can include areas of your life such as family, health, career, spiritual, education, travel, etc.

2. Prioritize - Choose a few goals you want to begin with. Which ones are more important or urgent to you? List those on a separate sheet.

3. Get Specific - Once you have decided which goals you are going to work toward, write them down on a new sheet of paper and begin adding the details of the goal. Be very specific. Only use words and description that are positive and describe what you DO want to accomplish. List each step that you need to take toward that goal.

4. Visualize Your Goals - Picture them often in detail in your mind. You can also post pictures from magazines or photos to help you see your dream.

5. Watch Your Progress - Read over your goal list regularly. It will help to remind you of your progress and keep you on track. You can also hang your list up where it is always visible, like at your bedside. If you notice that you haven’t made any progress, try adjusting what steps you need to take.

6. Work Through The Bumps - Your journey toward a goal may not always run according to your plan. You may have setbacks. Learn from them. They may be good lessons to help you in the future. Some of the best experiences come from the actual journey toward your goal, than the goal itself.

7. Mission Accomplished. Next! - Once you have completed a goal, begin to work on the next and so on. Goals setting should be a constant action. Make it a life-long habit.

Tips for Encouragement

1. Use your emotions to help you to continue to move towards your goal.

2. Every step you take, no matter how big or small, gets you closer to your goal and your success.

3. Your only failure will be if you give up and quit. Don’t be afraid of setbacks or mistakesthey will bring you closer to success.

4. We can be our own worst enemiesbe compassionate toward yourself.

Congratulations!

Achieving Goals: The Remaining 90% - Sheer Persistence

Achieving goals requires persistence. Here’s the proof: In 1915 Ty Cobb set up an amazing baseball record of stealing 96 bases. Seven years later Max Carey set the second-best record with 51 stolen bases.

Was Cobb twice as good as Carey?

Consider this: Cobb made 134 attempts. Carey made 53.

So Carey’s average was much better.

Cobb however made 81 more tries and was rewarded with 44 more stolen bases.

Frank Bettger makes this strong point on page 238 of his fascinating classic:
How I Raised Myself From Failure To Success In Selling

When you get behind the big success stories in any given field, you often find the most successful have made more attempts and spent longer hours at the given task than anyone else.

In other words, they give the law of averages a chance to work in their favor! They just keep on striking out, often against all odds.

With achieving goals, this sterling quality of persistence and its bed-fellow perseverance, is absolutely essential.

Yes the previous six steps are also essential and crucial BUT, if you do not persist, your wonderful plan can go down the drain. Your vivid mental images can just evaporate into thin air. Achieving goals simply becomes wishful thinking.

Achieving goals requires that you keep at it day in day out.

Then you are GUARANTEED results - eventually!

To maintain this kind of momentum you have to develop mental toughness.

To be mentally tough means you minimize the effects of discouragement and you turn negatives into positives.

Jack Black, in his illuminating book “MindStore”, uses a computer expression to combat negativity - “Delete that Programme”.

Whenever a negative thought comes into your mind or when others make negative comments, say to yourself, “Delete that Programme” and replace it with a positive thought.

For example, when you catch yourself thinking, “This is just not working, this is useless and a waste of time”, trigger mental toughness by saying “DELETE THAT PROGRAMME”.

Instead think: “What do I need to do to make this work!”

Admittedly, negative mental habits are hard to break.

It takes time and persistence but oh, the rewards when you do!

Do we understand then why the title of this final session is:

“Achieving Goals: The Remaining 90% - Sheer Persistence”?

It really does come down to that.

Just keep on going, persist, persist, persist, and let the good old law of averages work for you.

Achieving goals WILL become your reality!

Mission Style Furniture Has Continued Success

Mission Style is a general name often used to specify furniture of Mission Style architecture, the types of buildings of Spanish missions located throughout the South Western United States, or to the style aspects of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Mission Style can also refer to Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture. The furniture and architecture of Gustav Stickley is also associated with the Mission style. Stickley was considered a leader in the thought and design of mission furniture and lighting. The architecture of the Prairie School, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie Houses, were key to the development of American Mission style design. Without these two great men, the Mission style would more than likely have been a blip in the history of architectural design. It would be hard to imagine today’s style selection without these movements.

The Craftsman Style, or the American Arts and Crafts style is an American architectural, interior design, and decorative design made popular during the final years of the 19th century through the beginning of the 20th century. As a design movement, its favor remained stable until the 1930s, although in certain homes it continues to have a number of revivals until the present day. Both Independent wood workers and mass manufacturers both offer Mission style furniture.

Fun & Easy Ways to Help Your Family Set Goals For the New Year

Here’s something for January besides the usual diet promises. The start of the calendar year is a wonderful time to celebrate life and new beginnings. It is no wonder so many of us choose this time to set goals for ourselves. Most of us define goals as objectives that are within our control to obtain. Wishes, on the other hand, are our hopes and our dreams. It might seem impractical, but we still throw pennies into fountains and long for our wishes to come true. Here, we offer a different take on the standard New Year’s resolutions. Introduce your family to goal setting in a fun, child-friendly way.

Begin at dinner by discussing your own wishes and asking other family members to do the same. Give everyone a day or two to organize their thoughts, then gather in the room where your family feels most comfortable and begin to write. Let each person write as much (or as little) as they want. Leave a piece of paper on the breakfast table or in the car in case someone is suddenly inspired. Remember that dreams are very personal. Encourage everyone to share ideas without adding the slightest criticism or suggestion. Let your enthusiasm motivate you. By writing and sharing your dreams you make them real. Let your enthusiasm motivate you. Often, the greatest reward is not the destination but the journey itself. This New Year commit to building your own family traditions.

Here, we offer a child-friendly way to help families visualize their goals.

The Wishing Tree

The start of each calendar year is a wonderful time to celebrate life and new beginnings. It is no wonder so many of us choose this time to set goals for ourselves. The wishing tree visually proclaims your hopes for the future. Have family members inscribe thoughts on colorful ribbons. Tie the ribbons to a barren winter tree. Listen to them whisper their messages as they flutter in the wind.

Directions
You will need:
8 x 11-inch colored card stock
A hole punch
String
Scissors

1. Let each person choose a different color of bright card stock. The sheets should be 8 x 11-inches. You will need several sheets of each color.

2. Cut strips 2-inches wide by 8-inches long. Using a hole punch, make a hole at the top of each strip.

3. Cut a 10-inch length of string for each colored tag. To make a loop, thread one end of the string through the hole and tie a knot.

4. Have each family member write their wishes on the tags.

5. Hang the wishes over the branches of a designated tree and announce your dreams to the world.

Goal Setting And Value Identification Lead To More Meaning and Purpose

Life seems to hurtle by us these days. To keep up with our frantic-paced life, our ever-changing technological society has given us radical tools to work, plan and supposedly become more efficient. Computers, cell phones, Palm Pilots and pagers are just a few examples of gadgets that keep us connected, sometimes 24/7. Information whizzes by us at a mind-numbing rate from Internet news sites, work computer systems, E-mail at work, E-mail at home, not to mention pagers, to do lists and pop up reminders. All in the name of efficiency. Work demands that we do more in less time and the global village keeps us all connected with instant news. More and more of us are reeling from information overload, feeling exhausted and possibly headed for burn out.

So what can we do to slow down the onslaught on our time and get back to what really matters? Do we continue to plug in to our to do lists on our Palm Pilot and cram as much into each day as possible? Is there any meaning and purpose to our lives? Are we living according to our core values? Have we even the time as a society to reflect on these incredibly important questions?

Meaning and purpose - Who am I?

Finding any type of meaning and purpose requires us to step back from the daily pressures of life and find out what is truly important. It means to detach yourself from your belongings and look a little deeper than the house, car, paycheck or job that you own. Introspection isn’t an easy process. This is the beginning of a spiritual journey, the first key to lasting change. Without taking the time to reflect, we may one day wake up from our busy lives and realize we are living a hollow life. Very simply, ask yourself who you are. Do it now: “Who am I?”

Perhaps you are a father, an adventurer, an entrepreneur, or a musician. Perhaps you are also a philosopher, athlete, programmer, gardener or writer. You may also feel compassion, love, ambition, or any other deep-rooted emotion. Take a few minutes and in one simple sentence describe who you are. Describing who you are is the first step towards finding meaning and purpose. Who you are will also certainly help answer the question of “why am I here.”

Meaning and Purpose - Values.

Now that you know who you are, how do you live up to that statement? Knowing your values is the next step to creating a life filled with meaning and purpose. Knowing and living by your values is all about retaining your personal power. Your values reflect the true you and every time you don’t live by them, or someone takes them away, your personal power diminishes. Sounds like something Superman has doesn’t it? Personal power.

Say, for example, you have a value called control. Control to you means leaving the office at a reasonable hour to see your family. All of a sudden your new boss wants you to stay late every night. By easily giving in to his demands you have now lost some of your personal power. Your values and personal power are very intertwined. Do you spend your time living according to your values? Do you know your values? Do you value freedom, beauty, appreciation, and compassion? Interesting question, isn’t it? And your values will certainly change as you grow. Being a bachelor as opposed to a family man might bring two different sets of values.

Meaning and Purpose - Goals.

OK, so you have your who am I statement, and your core values written out. How do we live up to these, and continue to grow as a human being? With goal setting, of course. Goal setting without knowing who you are, and your values, is like shooting blindly in the dark. There is no target, no direction, just random goals based on the flavour of the month. By knowing who you are and your core values, your goals are always in tune with the true you and a life filled with meaning and purpose.

So, maybe in your who am I statement you have described yourself as a father and an outdoors person with one of your core values being beauty. Maybe a weekly hike in the woods with the family would be a goal. Now you have truly opened the door to what is truly meaningful to you. Having taken the time to reconnect with the true you through these exercises, isn’t goal setting that much easier?

In our North American schools we concentrate almost entirely on academics. But being such complex creatures with an infinite amount of choices, why don’t we spend more time educating ourselves on the three questions that really matter?

Who am I?
What are my core values?

What are my goals?

Develop Your Soul Goals!

Occasionally when I talk with people about goals they seem to interpret the intention of goals as being to get more things. Naturally things are important but there is so much more to goal setting that I wish to share with you.

Of course it is important to have goals for new things …

Perhaps your dream home by the ocean …

Maybe a nice shiny new car to get you around in style …

or even a new iPod to listen to your Goals Magic CD’s on :)

It’s great to set goals for new things, but not for the things themselves, rather what they will make of you to get them.

But there is another type of goal which I want to challenge you to think about and begin to set. It’s soul goals!
Now I know you are wondering … what are soul goals and how do they apply to me and my life? Great question, so come with me and discover why you will soon be applying them in your life.

Soul goals are those goals that are larger than you! They are goals that impact on other people and on the world around you. They are goals that you invest your heart and soul into without any expectation of return. Soul goals are what gives life its passion, purpose & meaning!
Think of Martin Luther King Jnr … his whole life was dedicated to the pursuit of his soul goals! In the end he gave his life for his soul goals. It takes a mighty goal and a might man to give your life to.

What about Mother Theresa? She passionately pursued her soul goals of taking care of those who were not empowered to look after themselves.
Now I’m not suggesting that you will want to pursue grand goals that have a profound impact on the world around you … rather, that you look deep inside yourself and find something that you have a passion to contribute to the world.

What is it that you feel a sense of desire to do something about? What cause can you see yourself adding value to? What community, national or global projects are calling you to them and resonating with you?
All of us need soul goals that we can invest our hearts, our minds and our souls into. We all need to feel a connection with something larger than ourselves. Its inherent in our souls to want to give without expectation of return.

As you search for your soul goals now, open your mind and heart to the infinite possibilities to match your unique skills, wisdom, specialized knowledge, compassion, assets, contacts, networks, creativity, and genius to. As you read these words knowing what you know about your incredible untapped capacity you can find a way to apply it in some way for the greater good.

Seek out your soul goals! Set your soul goals! Share your soul goals! Pursue your soul goals! Grow your soul goals! Encourage others to adopt soul goals!
Here is a noble thought … for every five goals I set for me I have one soul goal to help thee! Soul goals are paying back your debt of gratitude for the good fortune you have to be able to pursue your personal or business goals.

So add a little soul into your goals!

The Importance of Aligning Your Personal Goals With Your Business Goals: Part 3 of a Series

Would you like to be sure that your personal goals are consistent with your business goals? (Yes) (No)

You might have certain personal goals that are, or become, divergent to your business goals.

For instance, let’s say that you set clear personal goals to compete in the Iron Man Triathlon in Hawaii. Obviously, to compete in an arduous event like this you not only have to train rigorously, but you also have to qualify by competing in a number of prior triathlons, placing high enough in these events to earn a bid fro the Iron Man in Hawaii.

At the same time, let’s say you are married with two kids, and you have set some very aggressive professional goals, which include starting your own business and making it profitable within a 2-3 year time horizon.

Given the fact that the average new entrepreneur puts in 60-70 hours per week and you have family responsibilities to consider, chances are you will experience major goal conflicts in your life when it comes to competing in triathlons. Something has to give.

Do you give up your sports goals, your business goals, or your family?

These are tough decisions.

They all boil down to making sure that your personal and professional goals are compatible.

The process of setting synchronous personal and business goals speaks to the importance of setting a clear and workable life strategy. The process of creating a life strategy includes the homogenization over time of personal and business goals. Unless you unify your goals there will be goal conflict, which fosters turmoil in your life.

For the best results, you need to start by creating a life strategy that makes sense to you in terms of satisfying all of your personal and professional aspirations, leaving quality time for your family, and fitting everything into a reasonable time schedule.

In general, people today work too hard, play too hard, and neglect their health and rest time. It is truly a challenge to fit everything in and lead a balanced life.

At the end of the day, at the end of a career, if all you have to show for all of your hard work and hectic schedule is a large net worth while your family never saw you, and your health suffered terribly because you drove yourself too hard, you have to ask yourself, ‘Was it really worth it?’ Take it from expert workaholics, balance your life, plan your life, and enjoy your life -you can take happiness and love with you, money you cannot.

Keep in mind, there are always trade-offs in this process of goal setting and life strategy building. It is important that you weigh all your options in order to make choices that support a healthy and happy life for you and your family.

Yes, it may take a change in mind-set, career, lifestyle, or even location to balance your life, still be productive, and achieve the goals that you want to achieve.
