Spam Cop… Public Servant Or Self- Proclaimed GOD!!

Everyone on the internet is concerned about the prevalence of unsolicited email, AKA spam.

I understand their concern, but there has to be a better way to handle the situation than through the bully tactics of elitist groups such as Spam Cop.

I’ve been a target of their guilty until innocent tactics and no matter how many times I prove that I’ve spammed no one they twist the situation into it being my fault.

They remind me of the Spanish Inquisitors torturing “heretics” at the stake, the truth be damned. They twist the wording of emails to make any answer wrong.

I don’t know how in a country like America where we’re innocent until proven guilty, it is just the opposite with the IRS and Spam Cop.

It’s like an analyst asking a patient if they still hate their mother. There is no possible way to answer correctly.

It’s time for marketers to wake up to the fact that anyone is their target. They can cause you more hassles and affect your business for any reason or no reason.

Where are the advocates of free speech? Where are the advocates of free enterprise?

Wake up marketers, you could be next. You could be the next one attacked by the Spam Cop McCarthyism. Don’t take your liberty for granted.

The internet is still experiencing growing pains and for some reason these individuals have appointed themselves as the internets version of Hitler’s Brown Shirts.

I refuse to cave in to these elitists who feel it’s their duty to tell me how I’m in the wrong no matter what the proof to the contrary.

The media already controls the air waves. The internet is one of the only bastions of free expression left for the average person.

Don’t let freedom of speech and free enterprise go onto the endangered species list because of these self - appointed censors.

I will not go quietly and I hope you feel the same way.

If I wanted to be controlled by a dictator I’d move to Iraq.

Since I live in America, I still expect due process and I refuse to cave in to faceless terrorists.

Let freedom ring.

Wishing You Success, John

SpamCop Vigilantism

The following is a note I received from an advertiser after he
got a SPAM warning from a Spam Vigilante. Note that his service
is a SPAM Filtering Service!

Mike,

Do you know what this means, and how it happened?

My response to my list advertiser is next

Joe,

You have just become the latest victim of spam vigilantism by a
SpamCop member. It is a hate crime practiced by folks with
little else to do but chase phantom criminals because they are
so annoyed by REAL spammers. I guess you can’t blame them since
that is what obviates the SpamFilter Service you provide. I have
written previous articles on the absolute stupidity of this
vicious circle. You provide a valuable service with SpamFilter
which is intended to stop spam directly. SpamCop thrives, in
part, because your very worthwhile SpamFilter service is so
necessary. I only wish more people would use SpamFilter and
fewer used SpamCop.

Here is the usual course of events, Joe.

I host a daily horoscope list that goes to 4500 people. Many
times enthusiastic astrology list subscribers sign up friends
and relatives without their permission, to share a particular
horoscope with them. It’s the biggest drawback to hosting that
list.

But I keep all subscription requests and can prove them. I’ve
had run-ins with SpamCop before and they know about my list and
that there are occasional complaints due to those unrequested
sign-ups to the list by over enthusiastic friends and relatives.
As you can see, I am advertising SpamFilter in that daily
horoscope and when a complaint goes to spamcop, their mindless
automated system sends to every domain listed in the email.

I’ve had trouble with it before and have a section in the
SpamFilter folder discussing it. Note the links to SpamCops
Abuses and the multiple articles from other victims of the
so-called service. Most of us are list hosts or have our own
newsletters. Read the articles I have posted.

http://website101.com/SpamFilter/spamcop.net.html
http://website101.com/SpamFilter/spamcops.html
http://website101.com/SpamFilter/spammer_spamming.html

All that is required is to notify everyone involved of the
likely cause, that is friends signing up others without
permission. I even directly ask people NOT to sign up others to
avoid this trouble. But when it does happen, I always notify my
web host, the list host and any advertisers in the list and it’s
becoming routine, unfortunately, because of how SpamCop works –
or I should say, doesn’t work. That is the reason I like your
SpamFilter service so much. It removes the crap to allow me more
time to deal with real issues.

SpamCop is a real issue and I tire of the vigilantes involved
with them. Unfortunately, it seems not to go away, no matter how
many list owners are attacked this way. I’m sending a copy of
this to my Web Host, my List Host, to SpamCop, to you and to
other advertisers, so that everyone is aware of the stupidity
involved and doesn’t take the matter too far. I’ll be posting a
copy of this in the SpamFilter article file as well to further
illustrate the vigilante nature of SpamCop members.

Makes me think of lynchings and other hate crimes when people do
this. Talk about knee-jerk reactions. Notice that the complainer
is masked by SpamCop? They complain anonymously and it’s not
possible to respond to them, even when you would like to explain
it to them. Neither can you unsubscribe the complainer. Usually
they just continue to complain and you must continue to defend
yourself so your host doesn’t take action against you, your list
or your site.

In this case I can prove the person is subscribed, and if they
did the complaining directly to me, I could show them the
subscription and the IP address of the person that subscribed
them. But they string up the noose and attempt to hang the
object of their wrath, even if they ought to be stringing up the
friend or relative that subscribed them to the list without
their permission. Note also that there is a plainly visible and
always available UNSUBSCRIBE link at the bottom of the list.

They don’t unsubscribe, they would rather complain than to take
direct action. It’s all really very absurd.

The following is a copy of the daily horoscope list that I host
that was falsely accused of spamming by someone that was signed
up by a usually well-meaning friend who simply wants to share a
horoscope they think has particular meaning for their friend or
relative. I don’t condone this, and I wish that subscribers
wouldn’t do it, but it is rather harmless, isn’t it? Notice the

Spammers - Where do They Come Up With This Stuff?

Lets face it we all get spammed and it drives us nuts! If it were not for folders, I would probably NEVER find my “legitmate” email. I probably do NOT get as much spam as most people do, but when I do get it, boy do I get it! I especially love it when people come by and spam my paid list building site, little do they know that I have several ways of finding out WHO they are ;o)

When it comes right down to it though, sometimes you really have to laugh at some of the garbage they send. According to spammers not only do I need viagra, I also need an enlargement for a body part I don’t even have. I some how also managed to request this information at one of their sites, not once, but 200 freakin’ times.

We all have our incoherent days, but I think I would at least get the drift after the first 100 times. And really now, like I am going to send a spammer my credit card info in an email! Like I said, we all have our incoherent days, but I am sure as heck NOT that darn incoherent at ANY time. Even if a web site doesn’t use a “secure” server -I’m NOT buying and there’s no two ways about it, let alone in an email.

Seriously, like how stupid do these people really think we are? “Laurie how would you like to harvest millions of email addresses a day?” Whoo-Hoo! I better jump right on that one, so my web host can shut me down and I can lose EVERYTHING I’ve worked so hard for in the last 3 plus years. Yeah I will get right on that one.

“I saw your site and got your email.” Really? So what did it look like? Because last time I checked there was NO site for that email address you moron. And if there was - WHO said you could email me?

What really makes me laugh is in the body of the email it reads, “Would you like to start a home business?” You just told me you went to my site, obviously you would know I ALREADY have a business! In fact, I have four of them so you may want to head back there that way you can learn the REAL way to market online.

This last little episode really gave me a good chuckle, I got spammed by some person claiming I requested the information (a private email address). So, I reported it to the program owner and to the autoresponder service that they were using (which is owned by a good friend of mine). The program owner allowed the person to state their “case” and forwarded me a copy of their response.

This was their reply - “I’m not certain where I received that email address from. I used to buy email addresses, but I don’t do that anymore. I have been marketing now for over two years and NEVER had a spam complaint, so I’m really appalled at this acusation. I have had 4 of my ISP accounts shut down, because maybe the people were offended by the ad copy. The person who sent you this complaint MUST be someone I have previously been in contact with because that is the only way to get on my list.”

Sheesh, I wonder WHO the LIAR is in this case? There’s nothing like a contradictive statement to hang yourself out to dry. In this case the person should have just came right out and said, “Yeah, I harvested her email address”, instead of talking in circles and digging themselves into a DEEPER hole. The great Homer Simpson once said, “DOH”! (but hey at least he admits to doing something STUPID!)

What is the Fuss?

—————————————- Note: reproduction in e-zine is permitted provided author is informed. —————————————-

What is the Fuss?

I am a young surfer, barely six-months old. But I already know that spamming is a sin, soon to be made a crime. However, as an adult who has been around for quite sometime, I really do not understand the logic of it all.

What is wrong with sending decent emails to strangers? It’s because they have not asked for it. But are banners, pop-ups and pop-unders solicited? Yeah! How about TV advertising? You didn’t ask for them either, did you? These, mind you, are PAID for. Are you saying that paying someone to deliver the emails will be acceptable? If not, what really is the fuss?

Like everything else, the fuss is about money. If it is OK for Tom, Dick, and Harry to advertise for himself, Where is advertising revenue going to come from? Well, as someone who has to put roof over head and food on table, I am beginning to see the truth.

This thing has got to be stopped. How? Why not nail it with a bad sounding label. What do you have in mind? How about SPAM for “Self Publicity-Advertising Mess”? Not bad for a bad name. That would also give the public something to spit from its lips. Like SPAMMING is bad for health, or whatever.

Of course, that is not supposed to be heard. But, according to great grandma, That’s how SPAMMING has come to be frown upon. It’s not about table manners, mind you. It’s about whether any lunch should be free. It is a conflict between cooks and those who prefer to cook for themselves.

Can SPAMMING really be stopped? Yes, in name but not in kind. As always, devils are steps ahead of the gods. Email address collecting has already become a kind of business. And people are having themselves opted in everyday. What this creates is a kind of new syndication. In this way, almost everyone will be happy. Cook will keep their jobs and no lunch will be free. There will be no more unsolicited emails. Some though would still complain about unwanted publicity and advertising. But then, as great grandma used to say, Who is to know that one’s words are not welcomed unless one speaks?.

What is Spyware? Find Out Now And Protect Yourself!

Spyware and Adware viruses have rapidly become the number
one threat to your computer with over 90% of computers
already infected. These include “Trojans”, Web Bugs, Advertiser
Software, Monitoring Software and more. Fortunately there are
good spyware protection and adware spyware virus removal
tools available. Sorting through them all to find the right one is a
challenging task and an important decision to make.

Consequences From Spyware: hijacked browsers, reset home
pages, changed search results, spam emails sent to you, slow
browsers, toolbars added to your browser, and many more.

You Need To Understand What Spyware Is!

Spyware and Adware, also called “Malware”, are files made by
publishers that allow them to snoop on your browsing activity,
see what you purchase and send you “pop-up” ads. They can
slow down your PC, cause it to crash, record your credit card
numbers and worse. If you’re like most Internet users, chances
are you’re probably infected with these files. Simply surfing the
Internet, reading email, downloading music or other files can
infect your PC without you knowing it.

Q. So What is Spyware?

A. Spyware are individual programs that embed themselves
within your computer and monitor your internet browsing
activites. They can spy on your confidential information
(passwords, credit card info, etc).

Q. What is Adware?

A. Adware are software applications that display advertising
banners and popups. If you get inundated with popups chances
are you have been infected by Adware.

Q. What is Malware?

A. It is the short term for malicious software. Malware are more
commonly referred as viruses, trojans, and worms.

Q. What is a Trojan virus?

A. A Trojan virus is software that breaks through computer
security and disguises itself as something benign (harmless).

Q. What are Computer Viruses?

A. Destructive programs that disrupt the normal functioning of
computer systems.

Is Your Computer Infected?

This is no longer something that you only see in sci-fi movies -
spyware can attack anyone! If you’ve downloaded some music,
files or documents and suddenly started getting annoying ads
popping up on your screen, you could definitely be infected with
spyware and/or adware software!
Anyone who visits corrupt websites (you won’t know you have),
clicks on deceptive popups or views a spam email message is
vulnerable. Simply put, if you’re online, you’re at risk.

The Short Summary: Is your PC running slower than usual? Are
you getting popup ads and do not know where they are coming
form? Then you could have spyware software running on your
computer without your knowledge.

The Solution: choosing an anti spyware software protection
program immediately, to eliminate the threat to your computer,
files, sensitive information and peace of mind.

Get Rid Of Spam

Every day, both dmoestic and corporate users of the internet receive considerable amounts of spam e-mail. They are not only annoying, but sometimes you can miss an important e-mail or newsletter simply because you lose it among the great number of e-mails that flood out your Inbox. Often you’ll find that important people neglect to read your e-mail, because busy people like them hardly have the time and patience to browse through the huge quantities of spam mail they receive.

One solution to this problem is a filter or a free spam blocker. Many companies have designed filters for their customers. Many e-mail servers, especially the renowned ones that have a reputation to protect, have their own free spam blocker. There are several types of programs that can help you stop spam, including:

- the ones that are offered when you create a new e-mail address. Every company that provides e-mail service has a spam filter, including those that offer free accounts like Hotmail, Yahoo!, Gmail and so forth.

- there are also standalone programs that go through your mail folders regularly and do their best to separate valid e-mail from spam and unwanted mail. The main disadvantage with these free spam blockers is the fact that, when they do their checks, they use quite a large percentage of your computer’s resources and sometimes also of your bandwidth. Before installing this kind of free spam blocker, you’ll need to decide if this is okay with you.

- other types of free spam blockers are the ones that work as plug-ins to other programs like e-mail clients. The disadvantage with this kind of approach is that you need to download all your mail anyway, before the plug-in can do its stuff.

When you decide to use a filter, you must be sure that you update it or install new versions regularly, because marketing researchers working for spammres are continuously developing new ways of ‘fooling’ the filters. Filter makers must keep up by improving their software accordingly.

A free spam blocker works by looking for trigger words or phrases inside the text of the e-mails, and categorizing e-mails on that basis. Nowadays, there are special programs being created that are designed to pass spam through free spam blockers by re-arranging words or using a different language style in the e-mails. This is an unfair marketing strategy, of course, but if you want to be protected against it, you must always have an up-to-date version of your free spam blocker program.

Specialists recommend that you should review your needs and see what kind of filter suits you best. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages. You must make up your mind whether you want to use the default filter on the e-mail server, or if you want to download all your mail before scanning them, or if you are willing to share your bandwidth with a standalone application. The best way is of course, if you can blend all the programs in one, but that’s not always practicable. Still, it is advisable that you should not remain satisfied with the free spam blocker that your e-mail server provides, because you will probably continue to receive unwanted mail in spite of it. Using a plugin in addition to server-side filters is viewed by many experts as the most effective way of getting rid of spam, considering the trivial effort it takes to set up.

How To Analyze A Rip-Off Scheme

This review is taken DIRECTLY from a piece of “junk mail.” It is or the program that starts out with the heading: “Before You Decide To Throw This Away, Please Read The Enclosed At Least Once - Then Decide. This is Not a Chain Letter! I Threw The Program in The Trash.”

The first paragraph reads: “I had received this program before and threw it away, but later I wondered if I shouldn’t have given it a try. Of course, I had no idea who to contact to get a copy, so I had to wait until I was mailed another copy of the program - eleven months passed, then it came. I DIDN’T throw this one away. I made $41,000 on the first try!!” Signed by D. Wilburn, Muncie IN.

In order to get your attention quick, Mr. or Ms Wilburn shares their experience of making the mistake of throwing the letter away. A normal person will say to themselves: “I don’t want to make the same mistake Wilburn did. He had to wait another 11 months before he had the chance, so I better really read this thing.” But in reality you’ll find out that this piece of garbage has been floating around for years and if you miss this copy, you’ll get another one tomorrow or the day after.

The next thing you see is a bold headline reading: “You are about to make at least $50,000 in less than 90 days - in the comfort of your own home. Read the enclosed program, then read it again.” The average person is skeptical but the idea of money has been planted in your mind right up front. This will cause you to read a little while longer.

The rest of the page is completely filled with hype - informing you everything is LEGITIMATE and LEGAL. (We all want to be legitimate and legal don’t we?) Claims are made that the program works 100% every time and how thousands have used the program to raise capital to start their own business, pay off debts, homes, cars, etc., and even retire. You can ALWAYS recognize a scam because your emotions are appealed to in a big way. Think about it - doesn’t everyone on the planet earth want money to start a business? Pay off debts? Have homes, cars, etc.? Would anyone turn this offer away? NO! That’s what makes it so easy to recognize these scams - they appeal to everybody and do nothing! Your emotions are cruelly played with!

Okay, let’s move on. Frank T of Bel Air MD relates his personal testimonial at the top of Page 2. Try to look in the phone book and find either D Wilburn or Frank T. Notice how only a partial part of their names and addresses are ALWAYS presented. This is so nobody can find them. But why bother? They don’t exist!

The instructions are presented on the rest of Page 2. They consist of precise directions for ordering four reports, paying $5 cash for each one and moving the names around on the list. This is a typical chain letter and they don’t work because 99.9% of everyone receiving it replaces their name and members of their family with the people listed.

These instructions are completely stupid. They make you go through a bunch of bull just to make you believe you are doing something worthwhile. Actually - all they’re doing is selling you some worthless reports - which you may or may not ever receive.

Page 3 instructs you to get a mailing list to mail the letter you are reading to. Of course, when you order the reports, you will get information on where to purchase this mailing list. Don’t you see that these people only care about selling you a mailing list? They could care less if you get a response or not because they made their money from you purchasing their bunch of worthless names and addresses. In fact, you are even told to get names and addresses from your phone book. Come on! This is the ABSOLUTE WORST way to sell anything simply because you have no idea what these people are interested in. Even if you sold a real product, let’s say: baby-sitting services - you wouldn’t sit down and advertise it by writing letters to everyone in the phone book. Instead, you’d place an ad in the paper and have people only interested in baby-sitting contact you.

Now comes the guarantee. It says: “The check point which guarantees your success is simply this: you must receive 15-20 orders for Report 1. This is a must. If you don’t within 2 weeks, send out more programs until you do. Then, a couple weeks later, you should receive at least 100 orders for Report 2.” Notice the word “should.” The fact is, you could mail until the day the Lord comes back and you’ll NEVER get 15-20 orders. You’d be lucky to get even one. Believe me - 1,000’s of people have put the chain letter theory to a variety of tests and actually given it every chance in the world to make money. None have ever worked.

Now, here’s the hype that really gets most people. Here it is reprinted in it’s entirety: “Let’s say you decide to start small, just to see how it goes, and we will assume you and all those involved send out only 200 programs each. Let’s also assume that the mailing receives a 5% response. Using a good list, the response could be much better. Also, many people will send out thousands of programs instead of 200! But, continuing with this example, you send out 200 programs. With a 5% response, that is, 10 orders for Report 1 (ten people responded by sending out 200 programs each) for a total of 2,000. The 5% response that brings 100 orders for report 2. Those mail out 200 programs for a total of 20,000. The 5% response to those is 1,000 orders for Report 3. The 1,000 send out 200,000 total and the 5% response to that is 10,000 orders for Report 4 (10,000 $5 for you.) Your total income in this example is $50 + $550 + $5,000 + $50,000 + $55,550. Remember friend, this is assuming that 95 out of 100 people you mail to will do absolutely nothing and trash this program. Dare to think what would happen if everyone sent out 1,000 programs instead of only 200. Believe it, many people will do that and more. By the way, at current prices, your cost to send out 200 programs is less than $100. The participation fee is ridiculously low when you consider what you stand to gain! Consider yourself fortunate to be invited to participate in an exclusive program that really works. Have faith. Think positively, Keep in mind that your investment is minimal and it’s easy money invested in you.”

Give me a break! What a bunch of lies. Anybody that reads this and really believes it can work must also believe that Snow White really lives in the forest with the 7 dwarfs.

The truth of the matter is that it really would work if everyone did what they were supposed to do - but they won’t. I’ll prove it. Go to a place where there are a lot of people (like a mall). Walk up to the first person you meet and ask them to give you a $5 bill. In return for their $5, they will get $50,000 if they will just find 10,000 other people to give them $5 by promising them the same thing. How many people do you think will take you up on your offer? If you do find one person to do it they will either be mentally retarded or hard of hearing. So if you couldn’t work the program in person, what makes you think it will work through the mail with people who have no idea who you are? The truth is - it doesn’t work. It NEVER will!

Page 4 tells you all about these four wonderful reports you will be purchasing. Their titles are beautiful: “How to Make $250,000 Through Multi-Level Order Sales” and “Sources For The Best Mailing Lists.” I’m sure we all can’t wait to order them right away.

Page 5 is a personal note from the originator of the program - Edward L. Green. He doesn’t have a city and state beside his name. Why? Because his full name is used. (Remember, they don’t want you to try and find these people.) A real testimonial would be proud to give you the full name, full address and phone number of the individual so you could get in touch with them to find out more about the program. Anyone hiding so that you can’t call them up or write to them directly is a scam artist. No doubt about it!

Edward L Green tells you about how poor he was in 1979. He also says that he will never see a penny of your money. He has already made $4 million and wants to retire. Give me a break. If you made $4 million wouldn’t you want $5 million or $10 million or $20 million. Why stop at a measly $4 million when you could star on the Lifestyles of The Rich and Famous and be interviewed by Robin Leach? $4 million is chicken feed if something really worked to bring in this amount of money!

Amazingly though, on Page 6, Johnson Distributing gives a real name and address. But try to get a phone number on them with an address of “PO Box 7, SAFB IL 42225-0007.” It doesn’t exist!

Page 7 and 8 contain letters from Chris Johnson, Paul Johnson, A. Zurki, Carl Winslow, A.S. Jalosyk, Bill Nelson, J.T. Adams, Charles Fairchild, Tommy Jayhet and Mary Rockland. They all tell you some hard luck story about how this program changed their life. Again - try to contact them. If you live in Waco TX, try and find Tommy Jayhet and see what he has to say about all this.

Do you get the picture yet? Almost all scams follow this same general theme. Don’t get taken!
